Imperial Sand Dunes

A massive desert landscape just across the California border

About 20 miles west of Yuma lies a pseudo-Sahara Desert that you needn’t fly across the world to see. Located in El Centro, California, the Imperial Sand Dunes is the state’s largest mass of sand dunes, spanning more than 64 kilometres. Once across the California border on Interstate 8, you can’t miss the massive mountains of sand. The wide, open spaces are a boon for campers and off-roading enthusiasts. Also, the terrain has long been a popular shoot location for American films, including Star Wars.
