Top five things to do in Puerto Rico

Arm yourself with this checklist to maximize your visit to this Caribbean hotspot.

1. Hike El Yunque National Forest

With its mountainous terrain, Puerto Rico is a hiker’s heaven. There are more than a dozen protected forests, and this 113-sq. km forest is one of the best. There are more than 23 trails where you may spot lizards, tree frogs and crabs.

2. Dive around the island

Expect plentiful coral reefs, 600 fish species and water temperatures in the 20°C range during winter. Fajardo, on the east coast, boasts beautiful reefs while Desecheo, an island off the west coast, has caves aplenty. The south shore is the best bet for calmer seas.

3. Birdwatch at El Bosque Estatal de Boquerón

Spy on more than 60 commonly sighted species of birds from the meandering forest trails. It’s home to osprey, mangrove canaries and ducks in winter. Another option is the Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve, which has boardwalks and blinds for up-close-and-personal views.

4. Tee off at Dorado Beach

Jack Nicklaus ranks the 4th hole at East Course (Dorado Beach) as one of the top 10 holes on the planet. Stunning ocean views and memorable mountain ranges feature prominently.

5. Visit the arts district of Santurce

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico houses a collection ranging from 17th century art to modern works. For top Latin American art, stop by the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo. Lovers of street art and photography should stop by C787 Studios and La Respuesta.
